Did you have intentions to start the New Year off on the right foot by leaving your bad habits behind?
We all have them, but we are all also capable of change!
Here are seven easy steps to help you plan to boot your bad habits once and for all:
- You have to want them to go
Don’t question “do I really want to give this up?’
- Make a list of the reasons why you want to quit your bad habits
Make a long list of all the positive reasons why you want to quit your bad habits. Memorise the list. By doing this, you are stopping the bad behaviour with a list of good things you will get from doing so. Want to lose weight? Just picture yourself slim and looking good in those pants you have wanted to wear for so long.
- Make the choice
Now choose to do it. Remind yourself throughout the day “I am choosing to do this because…”
- Take action
Take the steps (one at a time) towards breaking your habits. In the example of wanting to lose weight, you may buy a treadmill or join a gym, or simply decide to limit dessert from every night to just two nights a week.
- Tell somebody
Find your accountability partner. Tell them your goal and your plan. Get them to check in regularly on your progress.
- Recover from the setbacks
You will have setbacks – we all do. However it is imperative to not make the setbacks into turn backs. Pick yourself up and get going again!
- Reward yourself
Regularly reward yourself with small gifts along the way. Then when you are finally over the bad habit, reward yourself with a big gift!
Habits are hard to break and progress is not necessarily easy but t is possible!
This simple plan will help move you in the right direction towards getting rid of them for good!
